What is IELTS Exam?



IELTS is an International Language Testing System Test Conducted by the British Council for the students who want to pursue an abroad education or the person seeking for a job abroad. where English is the main language of communication. Anyone who wants Permanent Residence in English countries needs to give IELTS Exam. Most Popular countries where IELTS accepted are the UK, Australia, New Zealand, USA, Canada. The exam mainly emphasis on checking the English skills of a person in four parameters -listening, reading, writing, speaking. IELTS Exam is jointly conducted by IDP Australia, British Council, and Cambridge English Language Assessment.

With the number of IELTS aspirants grew each, it becomes the most prominent Exam in International Education. In 2018, IELTS grew a record of  3.4 million people. IELTS is 100% accepted in universities in the UK, Australia. also, it is accepted in more than 3400 institutes of the US.


Who can give IELTS? (Eligibility)

IELTS can be given by any person irrespective of age, gender, qualification, race, nationality, religion, however, the IELTS test is not recommended for those who are under 16 age.



Why need to give  IELTS?

IELTS Exam is acceptable for not only for Academics, work purposes but also for the migration. It is an exam which shows your English proficiency. a person with a high band score shows his English academic and communication skills. a university recommends a person should have at least 6 band score.


Is IELTS is Compulsary for Study Abroad?

No, the IELTS exam is not a compulsion for University acceptance. many universities might not asked for IELTS. Students always have ambiguity for IELTS compulsion to whether to take the exam or not. well, it does have a weightage for acceptance in university. also, it further helps you in getting TA/RA assistantships. The universities lookout for a person with the highest IELTS band. as Visa's concern, the visa office might want to check the IELTS scorecard. as he wants to know whether a candidate has good communication skills or not.  scoring high in the IELTS exam is simply answering to the universities and visa authorities that you'll not have a problem of communication while staying in their country.

Type of IELTS

There are 2 types of IELTS  exam 

1.Academic 

2.General Training

The Speaking and Listening section is the same in both the Modules, the difference in the Reding and Writing section depending on which exam to take. The Reading, Writing, Listening section of the test are completed on the same day of the exam with no breaks in between them. However, the speaking section is completed in either a week before the exam or the exam day. This information is taken from your test centers.

IELTS General 
 general training is for the people for a Work permit, PR.


IELTS  vs TOFEL 

students often confused between IELTS and TOFEL on which exam to give. It is important to notice that the IELTS is more preferred in UK, Australia, Canada. while TOFEL is more popular in US, Canada.

Modes of IELTS  

IELTS Can be given through two modes

1. Computer-based IELTS Exam
2. Paper-based IELTS Exam


Educational eligibility and Attempts 

There is no minimum education criteria to give IELTS. Anyone who wishes to pursue higher education or want to work abroad can attempt the IELTS test. (Both General and Academic)
however, a candidate should always check the criteria by Educational Institution or organization they applying.



IELTS  Exam Sections 
There are four sections in the IELTS exam which are Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking.

IELTS Reading Section 

 The reading section consists of Reading Comprehension(RC). which includes your reasoning on RC passages.
to score high in the section you need to have a strong vocabulary foundation.

IELTS Writing Section 

The writing section made of two types. type I tests your analytical critical writing. type II interpret  your  writing skills though writing a summary of  pie diagrams or the data interpretation graphs

IELTS Speaking Section

The Speaking section tests your communication skills in English. You'll have to give an interview with IELTS Examiner. 

IELTS Listening Section

The Listening section consists of listening to an audio file and solving questions based on audio conversion. 


IELTS Band Score Calculation 

IELTS is divided into four sections Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking. in each section, you'll score a band on a scale of 0-9. the final score is the average of all the band that you scored in each section.
for example, you've given the IELTS exam and scores responding in each section 
Reading: 8
Speaking: 8
Listening: 7
writing: 6

your overall band  will be 8+8+7+6/4 = 29/4 =  7.2
